Christmas has always been my favorite holiday. I don’t really understand the myriad of people who consider Halloween to be the best. I mean its selfish and weird. I’m not saying the people who enjoy it best are selfish and weird. Just the holiday. “Trick or Treat!” is pretty intimidating if you really think about it. Anyways, this is a list (complete with pictures!) of some of the Christmas gifts I remember getting as a child (or teenager). I am sure I will not be able to remember most of them, and I have no idea what year I got what. But it will be a fun trip down memory lane!
A bicycle. Not this particular bicycle, but close enough. I actually remember a bit about this one, as I believe this was my sister’s first Christmas. So I would have been 5 years old. I think that I felt sick that night, or was sure I heard Santa or something, because I got out of my bed and went into my parents room, and on the way I saw that my sister had a bunch of presents (actually a toy pots and pans
set) and I didn’t see mine and was quite jealous until the morning.
A Bitty Baby. I named her Holly. I actually got this dress too! I have no idea where any of it is now, which makes me sad, especially considering that they change the clothes every few years so it would be really hard to get the stuff back. Maybe they have better shoes now. I got the Hispanic Bitty Baby, because when I got mine they didn’t have the Caucasian one with dark hair, only the blonde one. As a newborn I had dark hair (then I was bald after I rubbed it all off) so I wanted my baby to look like me. Seeing as how I am about as dark skinned as paste, I think this was a fail on my part. It is actually possible I got her for a birthday. This is ridiculous that I can’t remember because I was actually pretty old when I got her, but my memory is crap. When I was about 12 I got all kinds of dirty looks by wearing her (and other dolls) around in a baby carrier. It was pretty fun for me, and my mom was a good sport. Everyone thought I was a 10 year old whore (I am short and looked young for my age).
A doll house. This was a joint present for my sister and I. We played with it forever and ever. I was so excited to get it. My parents had been telling me that we didn’t have a lot of money, and Santa might not be able to get me a doll house like I wanted, so I was completely surprised Christmas morning to wake up and find it!
A super cute Water Baby. I actually had a couple other Water Baby dolls growing up. But this was my last one and I loved it. I was way to old to be getting baby dolls, but I wanted this one so bad. I can’t remember what I named her. She was a really pretty baby, and fairly realistic looking.
V-Tech Master Video Painter. I had to look up what this was called, because although I really wanted it when I was a kid, I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what it was called. I searched for “drawing pad that hooks up to tv” and got lots of way to modern results. So I searched for “drawing pad that hooks up to tv 90’s” and found it right away. Although this toy was pretty awesome, I didn’t get near the use out of it that I did a lot of other Christmas presents. Probably mostly due to the fact that I suck at art. And art on the television isn’t any easier. I remember that for some reason I was all excited to draw Santa Claus on this thing.
Alphie II. I don’t know how old I was when I got this, but I know I played with it a lot. For some reason I mostly remember a music card that came with it, and it had Claire de Lune or whatever and there was a picture of a swan. I am crazy.
I also got:
-a television. It was a tiny little thing, like 13 inches or something. But I was SOOOO excited. I was probably 14-16 and we didn’t have any cable/satellite, and our antennae didn’t get signal very good. So with this television I was able to pick up 1.5 channels really clearly! I watch SO much Blind Date I am surprised I am not scarred for life. I went shopping with my Grandma on Black Friday and she said that she wanted a TV for their camper, so I actually carried the TV out to the car for her. Really it was mine from “Santa”. I still have the TV and right now it is in the play room so the girls can watch Christmas tapes (yup, VHS) because there is no VCR hooked up to the TV in the living room. I also used it as my primary TV for a short period of time when I lived by myself. Very useful present!
